Higher Level Study Skills programme

This two day Higher Level Study Programme will prepare you for study within higher education.

Entry requirements

You should be undertaking or about to undertake a Higher Education course at Bedford College. This is an ideal course if you are progressing from Level 3 study (A-Level) to higher education, or if you are entering higher education and have not completed study for a significant period of time.

Course content

Day 1

  • Study Time Management
  • Reading and Research
  • E-books, HE Moodle & Smart PC Guides
  • Effective note taking
  • Academic Writing: descriptors for pass, merit & distinction

Day 2

  • How to plan and structure an assignment
  • Writing for different assignment types
  • Referencing and plagiarism
  • Presentation skills, Turnitin/EMA
  • Assignment brief (600-800 words) – it was recommended that subject course tutors be responsible for assessing the assignment outcome where the student had applied to study.

Assessment methods

A 600-800 word assignment will be issued to test the knowledge an understanding of the course objectives.
