Assessor / Coach Higher Apprenticeship Level 4

You must be in a job role that will allow you to gather the evidence necessary for the qualifications and components which form a part of the standards. The requirements are:

  • A qualification, at an appropriate level, and relevant up-to-date experience in a vocational/subject specialism.
  • Level 3 qualification in Assessing. Depending on the specific education and training context, employers (and/or Awarding Organisations) may require candidates without an Assessor qualification, to achieve this prior to completion of their apprenticeship.
  • Level 2 English and Mathematics qualification (or equivalent) and ICT Skills at Level 2 (or a willingness to undertake it)

Entry requirements

You must be in a teaching job role that will allow you to gather the evidence necessary for the qualifications and components which form a part of the standards. The requirements are:

  • 50 hours of ETS teaching per academic year (100 hrs total)
  • Minimum of Level 3 subject specific qualification
  • Level 2 English and Mathematics qualification (or equivalent) or a willingness to undertake it
  • A Mentor who will support you and complete formative observations of your practice

Course content

The Assessor / Coach will be able to:

  • Plan coaching and assessment
  • Deliver coaching support
  • Assess learners
  • Support quality improvement

Assessment methods

You will be assessed through building your own portfolio of evidence which will include observations, reflective accounts, professional discussion, Q&A, Recognition of Prior Learning (recognising with your employer what skills you have learnt in the workplace), a research project and other methods, all of which will be completed online using the College’s Virtual Learning Environment.


You will gain the following qualifications:

  • Safeguarding Level 2
  • Level 2 English, Mathematics and ICT Skills (or equivalent)

Further study and career options

You may want to progress on to further qualifications specific to your work; there are a wide range of qualifications relevant to the ETS sector. Or you could seek recognition of your prior learning to achieve entry, credit transfer or advanced standing for a higher education qualification at university.

Future careers: Progression within the sector onto a full teaching role within an education and training provider organisation.

Additional information

You need to be aged over 19 and your attendance in College will be subject to a functional skills assessment.

Next steps

To be eligible for an apprenticeship you must either be employed on a full-time contract by an employer willing to support your training or have an offer of employment as an apprentice. Bedford College can help you find a job role with an employer if you don’t already have one.
