Media Make up and Character Design Foundation Degree (FdA) Level 5 (full-time)

This course aims to enable you to work in film, TV, fashion editorial or in the performing arts. You will be taught specialist knowledge and expertise in the theory and practice of preparing performers. You will develop skills in character creation with an emphasis on prosthetics and special-effects make-up.  

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • 48 UCAS points (BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Hair and Make-up or Media Make-up, A-Level portfolio or 1 A-Level at A grade) AND
  • English at GCSE grade C or above or equivalent Level 2 qualification
  • Maths at GCSE grade C or above or equivalent Level 2 qualification is desirable.
If you are a mature student with a background in this industry and experience you will also be considered. You will be required to bring a portfolio of your make-up/artwork to your interview. 

Entry is subject to a successful interview, either face to face or via Skype/telephone. Practical examples will need to be sent before the interview and this should be arranged with the interviewer. You will be required to produce a portfolio of work showing a broad range of experience in specialist make-up.

  • MED-043-1 Period and Editorial Make-up and Hair Hughes
  • MED045-1 – Researching and Creating a Character
  • MED052-2 Fantasy Character Design Creation
  • MED053-2 Research and Applications of High Fashion Makeup
  • MED044-1 – Professional Practice
  • Foundation Degree Show

Further study and career options

After the course you can progress onto a top-up year at university, go straight into industry as a make-up artist, or make-up artist assistant or even become self-employed. The department has links to NASMAH (National Association of Screen Make up Artists)

Additional information

You will be required to spend £750 on make-up materials needed for your course. You will have the opportunity to attend Trade Fairs, Film Sets and Theatre Performances.
