Create your own Show Stopper moments with a Catering course at Bedford College

We’ve had cake week, biscuit week, batter week, bread week, and plenty more. The Great British Bake Off is in full swing and attracting millions of viewers each week!

Hospitality student at Bedford College

Bedfordshire has proven itself a force to be reckoned with in the GBBO tent; last year’s winner Nadiya Hussain is from Luton and this year’s Candice Brown is a PE teacher from here in Bedford! Our own Hospitality & Catering department has an excellent reputation locally and nationally, not least for cake decoration. Our fantastic students and staff regularly produce award-winning work, which we’re sure would rival any of Paul and Mary’s favourite show stoppers!

In this year’s annual Sugarcraft Exhibition, 40 talented students contributed three cakes and two models each, from Minions on a desert island to a complete sugarcraft garden. Having completed their Cake Decoration and Wired Sugar Flowers Level 1 and Level 2 courses, they can now progress onto higher level courses in sugarcraft or a range of exciting employment opportunities.

Aside from cakes, our students have won over 35 awards in a number of competitions. Last year, Stephanie Chou was awarded second place in the Student Game Chef Competition and Abbigail Smith won the local finals of the Future Chef competition. There are always plenty of opportunities for our students to show off their skills in regional and national competitions.

Students train in our on-site kitchens and restaurant, 25 Restaurant, which is open to the public. This year, the restaurant was awarded the prestigious AA College Rosette as well as a ‘Showcase’ ABC Award acknowledging the excellence of training provided here.

25 Restaurant holds exciting theme nights, such as the ‘Night at the Musicals’ event where guests enjoyed songs from various West End and Broadway musicals (courtesy of our Performing Arts department!) whilst tucking into a three-course meal, complete with hand-made chocolates and coffee as a finale. Check out what’s coming up at:

Professional Cookery student Ellen Copperwaite says, “I absolutely love cooking and have a particular passion for pastry and cake decoration. The course has helped me decide that I want to pursue a career in baking, so I am taking a part-time pastry course alongside the full-time cookery course. I also want to complete the part-time Cake Decoration course before leaving College with the aim of eventually owning my own café or bakery.”

All students have the opportunity to take additional relevant qualifications alongside their main course, such as food hygiene, health & safety, and food and drink service.

The more experience you have, the more job opportunities will be open to you, as our past students have shown. They now work for some of the world’s most prestigious companies including The Savoy, Le Méridien, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Gordon Ramsey, the Roux Brothers and Park Inn Hotels!

If you are interested in running your own restaurant, a career in hotel management, or would just like to have a better chance of taking on one of Paul or Mary’s dreaded technical challenges, then view our full range of courses.
