Solar Thermal Hot Water Installation & Maintenance Level 3 Certificate (BPEC)

The BPEC Solar Thermal Hot Water Installation & Maintenance qualification is designed for experienced plumbing and heating installers to give them the knowledge and skills required to enable them to select the most appropriate solar thermal hot water system for a building, based on consultation with the client about their needs and demands. This course will provide with the knowledge and skills required to install any of the common types of solar domestic hot water heating systems in the UK in a safe and workmanlike manner, and to maintain and service the common types of solar domestic hot water heating systems.

Entry requirements

In order to begin this course you should hold a G3 Certificate in Domestic Unvented Hot Water Systems, Energy Efficiency and Water Regulations. You should also hold an NVQ Level 2 in Plumbing and Heating, or three years of industry experience.

Course content

The course will consist of a number of units, including:

  • Understanding the Fundamental Principles and Requirements of Environmental Technology Systems
  • Knowing the requirements to install, commission and hand-over solar thermal hot water systems
  • The Install, commission and handover of ‘active’ solar thermal hot water systems
  • Knowing the requirements to inspect, service and maintain ‘active' solar thermal hot water systems
  • Inspect, service and maintain ‘active' solar thermal hot water systems.

The emphasis of the course is on ‘active’ systems, but also includes some content relating to ‘passive’ systems. The course covers fundamental design techniques but does not cover detailed design. It focuses upon systems with up to 20m2 of solar collector area, and is for domestic hot water production only.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed via practical assessments and an online theory exam.

Further study and career options

The BPEC Solar Thermal Hot Water course and certificate are recognised by all the current Microgeneration Certification Schemes as meeting the requirement for appropriate training in the solar thermal technology.
