Lead Adult Support Worker Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3

This is the sole apprenticeship standard for people employed in delivering adult care in England. This standard is also suitable for workers in the health sector. The standard covers the health and social care sectors which includes the National Health Service (NHS), private providers, local authorities and voluntary organisations.

Entry requirements

Grade requirements: You must demonstrate the ability work towards Level 2 in both English and maths following an initial assessment (if not already achieved).

Other requirements: You must be employed in the sector and willing to undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Whilst there are no formal criteria, people who successfully complete apprenticeships and continue to work in the sector most often exhibit empathy, care and interest in others and want to work in the health or social care sector. You should have a suitable level of physical fitness and ability to perform some aspects of the job roles for example, involve assisting in moving and handling of people and objects.

Course content

You will study:

  • Adult Diploma in Care (58 credits)
  • Care Certificate (15 units)
  • Lead Adults Standard
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths
  • End Point Assessment

Assessment methods

Assessment methods will include: End Point Assessment, e-portfolio, direct observation, professional discussions, knowledge activities and Q & A sessions. Functional Skills are assessed via online exams and a ‘speaking and listening’ assessment for English.


You will gain the following qualifications:

CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care

  • Functional Skills in English and maths if required

Further study and career options

Further study: On completion of this apprenticeship, you may progress on to our Assistant Practitioner (Health) Higher Apprenticeship Level 5. A wide range of qualifications are available for use within the Care sector or other work-related education and training to support continuing professional development.

Future careers: Many healthcare support apprentices complete their apprenticeship and continue to work as healthcare support workers/healthcare assistants with delegated responsibility for a range of tasks. They may also supervise other team members. To become a qualified Health Professional (e.g. nurse, allied health practitioner, healthcare scientist) apprentices would have to progress from their apprenticeship to undertake a specific qualification, often a three-year university degree, which, on completion, would enable them to register as a professional.

Next steps

To be eligible for an apprenticeship you must either be employed on a full-time contract by an employer willing to support your training or have an offer of employment as an apprentice. Bedford College can help you find a job role with an employer if you don’t already have one.
