Agriculture Intermediate (Level 2)

This study programme will cover the foundation knowledge and skills needed for you to progress on to a Level 3 qualification, including estate maintenance, machinery use, livestock husbandry, crop production, business management and work experience.

Entry requirements

To begin this study programme you will need... 

Duration: 1 Year

  • 3 GCSEs grades 9–3 or A*–D including English and maths 
    • BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Land-Based Skills with Functional Skills

Duration 2 Years

• 3 GCSEs grades 9–1 or A*–G including English and maths and a keen interest in Land-Based studies.

Course content

Areas of study on this programme are varied and will allow you to develop the practical skills and knowledge required to begin work in the agricultural sector or progress to further study.

  • Year 1 subject units will include:
    • Finding out about the land based sector
    • Working with others
    • Researching a topic
    • Caring for and feeding animals
    • Moving and accommodating animals
    • Growing plants

  • Year 2 subject units will include:
    • Introduction to Crop Establishment
    • Introduction to Farm Animal Production
    • Introduction to Land-based Machinery Operations
    • Participation in Providing Estate Skills Maintenance
    • Environmental and land based business
    • Undertake work related experience

  • English and maths:
    If you don't already have GCSE English and maths grade A*-C, we will work with you to help you develop your maths and English skills. 
    • Work experience:
      You will undertake work-related experience in the land-based industries
    • Personal development skills, study skills and employability skills 

Assessment methods

You will be continually assessed as the study programme progresses; a variety of methods of assessment will be used, including presentation, case studies, assignments and practical assessments.


• Land-based Studies BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma
• Agriculture BTEC Level 2 Diploma
• English and maths qualifications if required
Further study and career options

You can progress on to Agriculture Level 3, or employment in the farming industry as a farm hand or related role. Some of our students have gained employment in the local farming community and a large percentage progress on to the Level 3 qualification.

To take part in this course you will be required to pay up to £60 for materials. There will also be non-compulsory trips of approximately £500.

If commuting to Shuttleworth College will be difficult for you, then you can choose to live in our halls of residence on campus. Funding information

All full-time Level 1 and Level 2 courses are now FREE for everyone, whatever their age. If you are looking to study a Level 3 qualification, courses are still free if you’re under 19 or 19-23 and studying your first full Level 3 qualification. If you’re over 23 or studying a second Level 3 qualification, you will need to pay a fee. Find out more on our financial support page at
